Nederlandse Schilders & Belgische Schilders (198)

1860-1949

James Ensor was born in Ostend (Belgium) in 1860, he died in Ostend in 1949. Leading figure of the Impressionist years 1880 - 1890 and forerunner of Expressionism. Painter, sketcher, etcher of landscapes, marines, still lives, satirical and humorous subjects. He showed a personal impressionism that turned into an art of phantasy. His known themes are masks, skeletons, parodies and unrealistic portraits. Ensor is considered to be the initiator of modern-day art. His expressions of phantasy herald after all surrealism. His work is to be found in museums world-wide.
